Consideration: Resolution appointing Mr. J. Russell McElroy, III to The Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Health Care Authority of Jefferson County, Inc. (The MR/DD 310 Authority) to fill the unexpired term of Joan S. Bergman. Mr. McElroy will serve without compensation through end April 1, 2015.

Consideration: Resolution adopting the 2009 Jefferson County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan, in fulfillment of the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 and the Local Mitigation Plan requirements of 44 C.F.R. Section 201.6 and FEMA Local Multi-Hazard Mitigation Planning Guidance.

Consideration: Resolution declaring certain property surplus and authorizing it sell at public Internet auction.

Consideration: Resolution ratifying the acceptance of [selected] change order numbers 3 through 14 between the City and The Morris Group in the aggregate amount of $176,429.64 with respect to the Watkins Branch Flood hazard Mitigation [FEMA] project.

Consideration: Resolution awarding the bid for the purchase and installation of an alignment machine and 4-post alignment lift for the Public Works fleet maintenance area.

Consideration: Resolution authorizing and accepting the assignment of the real estate sales contract entered into by Lawrence-Arendall-Humphries Real Estate, Inc., acting as agent for the City, for the purchase of a 4.71 acre tract of land owned by Brook Baptist Church in the vicinity of River Run Drive and Overton Road.

The City is utilizing the services of Ceres Environmental to pick-up and dispose of storm debris. The clean-up cost is being paid partially by FEMA and the balance with local funds.

FEMA has imposed a deadline for debris removal. Accordingly, we are asking that all debris be piled at the curb on or before July 1, 2011 in order to ensure it is ready to prior to the last pick-up.

Beginning on OCTOBER 11 Rast Construction in conjunction with the Birmingham Water Works Board will begin a water line relocation project in your area. The work will be located in Montevallo Road adjacent to the Western supermarket, and it will be performed at night between the hours of 7:00 PM and 4:00 AM. During the hours of construction Montevallo Road will be closed down to one lane of travel, and all traffic will be flagged.

Election to Renew 9.9 mil Education Tax

On Tuesday, January 26, a city-wide election will be held for the single purpose of renewing a 9.9 mill ad valorem tax which has been financing Mountain Brook Schools for 47 years.

The approval of this tax renewal WILL NOT result in any new taxes for Mountain Brook homeowners, but will simply continue an existing source of basic school funding.

Revenues from the tax go directly into the school system’s general fund to cover basic costs such as teacher salaries and operating expenses.

The 9.9 mill tax is equivalent to the salaries and benefits of 83 teachers. To put that in perspective, Mountain Brook Junior High employs 89 teachers.

Therefore, this revenue is critical in maintaining current teacher-student ratios which are, in turn, essential to maintaining the quality of the education that this community has always expected and supported.

This election will be held at your normal polling place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26.

Absentee ballots are available by mail or by calling 325-5313.

Please vote YES on January 26th so we can continue to provide the excellence in education that helps define our community!
